In Erode District, a major hub for textile and garment industries, READ has been actively supporting women workers to improve their economic status. In the Gobi region, villages with a high number of women engaged in textile work were identified for intervention.
READ facilitated the formation of Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and conducted regular training and capacity-building programs. To promote sustainable livelihoods, financial support was provided for initiating small businesses.
In Alukuli village, five SHG women received a grant of INR 1.7 lakhs to start a home-based garments unit. Through this initiative, they are now earning up to INR 18,000 per month individually. This has significantly improved their financial independence and confidence.
The initiative demonstrates how targeted support can transform the lives of women workers and strengthen community development.
